Meet the Investing Across Borders Team

The team members are:

  • John Millies Anderson

    John Millies Anderson

    John Millies Anderson joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2011, and is responsible for the Converting and Transferring Currency indicator. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, John designed and managed USAID-funded development projects and analyzed food security conditions for the United Nations. He has lived and worked in Bangladesh, Kenya, and Malawi. John holds a master’s degree concentrating in economics and public policy from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School and a BA in economics from Swarthmore College. He speaks Spanish and is learning French.

  • Joseph Battat

    Joseph Battat

    Joseph Battat is a Senior Consultant to the World Bank Group and Investing Across Borders’s project advisor. Mr. Battat joined the World Bank Group in 1989 where he has held a number of positions since, including the head of its Foreign Investment Advisory Services (FIAS) [now the Facility for Investment Climate Advisory Services, as well as its Program Manager for the Middle East and North Africa, East Europe and Central Asia, China and Mongolia. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, Mr. Battat was a Marketing Systems Engineer at IBM Canada [1968-72] and a member of the faculty, School of Business, Indiana University [1982-89]. He was the founding Co-Dean of the first MBA program in China [1978-86], and helped establish the International Management Center, Budapest [1987-88]. He chairs the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Current World Affairs, a not-for-profit, fellowship granting organization, located in the United States. Mr. Battat received a Master of Science in Electronics Physics from Université de Grenoble [France] in 1968, a Diploma in Political Philosophy from Beijing University [China] in 1978, and Doctorate of Philosophy in International Business and Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1984.

  • Dieter Smet

    Dieter De Smet

    Dieter De Smet joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2011 and is responsible for the Employing Key Foreign Staff indicators. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, Dieter worked as a corporate and commercial lawyer in the Beijing office of Hogan Lovells LLP. He has also worked at Wenger & Vieli AG, Beijing and in the Shanghai office of Luther Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH. Dieter obtained a law degree from Ghent Law School (Belgium), an M.A. in Chinese Studies from Aveiro University (Portugal), a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Chinese Law from NUS Law School (Singapore) and an LL.M. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He speaks Mandarin Chinese, French, English and Dutch and is conversant in German.

  • Tania Ghossein

    Tania Ghossein

    Tania Ghossein joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2009. She is responsible for the Starting a Foreign Business indicators and coordinates the project in the Middle East and North Africa as well as high-income OECD regions. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, Tania worked as a corporate lawyer and as a documentary credit analysis officer in Beirut, Lebanon. She then moved on to work at the Embassy of Jordan in Washington D.C. Tania holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in international and comparative law from the George Washington University Law School and a law degree from the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut, Lebanon. She speaks Arabic and French and is learning Spanish.

  • Kusi Hornberger

    Kusi Hornberger

    Kusi Hornberger joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2007 and is based in Bogotá, Colombia. He is responsible for the Accessing Industrial Land indicators and coordinates the project in the Latin America and the Caribbean region. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, he worked in investment banking on projects in China, social and economic development consulting on projects in Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania and as an economist with the Millennium Challenge Corporation. Kusi holds a Masters in Public Administration in International Development from the Harvard Kennedy School, and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania. He speaks Portuguese, Spanish and Swahili.

  • Harald Jedlicka

    Harald Jedlicka

    Harald Jedlicka joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2008 and is based in Vienna, Austria. He is responsible for the Investing Across Sectors indicators and coordinates the project in the Europe and Central Asia region. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, Harald worked at Austrian Airlines where he was responsible for the expansion of the airline's network of destinations in Eastern and Southeastern Europe. He was also a consultant in the financial services industry practice group at Accenture. Harald holds a Masters degree in business administration and international management from the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, and a Master in Advanced Studies from the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe in Vienna. He speaks German and French.

  • Marton Kerkapoly

    Márton Kerkápoly

    Márton Kerkápoly joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2009 and is based in Vienna, Austria. He is responsible for coordinating the project in South Asia as well as East Asia and the Pacific regions. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, Márton worked as an in-house counsel at a regional train and freight company on the border of Austria-Hungary, where he was responsible for external relations with the International Railway Association. Márton holds a diploma in law from the University of Heidelberg, Germany and a Master in Advanced International Studies from the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna. He speaks Hungarian and German.

  • Peter Kusek

    Peter Kusek

    Peter Kusek is the co-manager of the Investing Across Borders project. Prior to joining the World Bank Group in 2006, Peter worked on small-enterprise development and microfinance in Bangladesh and Tanzania. He was also program manager at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based foreign and security policy think tank. Peter holds a master’s degree in economic policy and international development from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. He speaks German, Russian, French, and his native Slovak.

  • Antonia Menezes

    Antonia Menezes

    Antonia Menezes joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2009 and contributes to the Arbitrating Commercial Disputes indicators. She also coordinates the project in Sub-Saharan Africa and high-income OECD regions. Antonia has law qualifications from the London School of Economics & Political Science, the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice and McGill University. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, she qualified as a solicitor at the law firm of Linklaters in London and worked at Shearman & Sterling LLP in the international arbitration department in Paris. She also has justice reform experience in Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and Jamaica. She speaks French and is conversant in Spanish and Portuguese.

  • Nina P. Mocheva

    Nina P. Mocheva

    Nina P. Mocheva joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2008 and contributes to the Arbitrating Commercial Disputes indicators. Nina also works with the Alternative Dispute Resolution product of the World Bank Group. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, she practiced with the International Arbitration and Litigation Groups of White & Case LLP in Washington, DC. She holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Legal Studies from Georgetown University Law School where she was a Fulbright scholar and a Master of Law degree from Sofia University. Nina speaks Bulgarian, Spanish, and is conversant in Russian.

  • Sophie Pouget

    Sophie Pouget

    Sophie Pouget joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2011 and is responsible for the Arbitrating Commercial Disputes indicators. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, she practiced international arbitration and litigation for five years as an associate with the law firm Darrois Villey Maillot Brochier in Paris where she handled several large international commercial arbitration cases (in the defense, nuclear energy, pharmaceutical and publishing industries) under a variety of applicable laws, regulations and arbitration rules. She holds a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School, Tufts University, and is a graduate of Sciences Po Paris and the Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne. She speaks French and is learning Russian and Arabic.

  • Tanya Primiani

    Tanya Primiani

    Tanya Primiani joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2008 and is the co-manager of the project. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, she worked for the United Nations in Italy, Siemens Management Consulting in New York and at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, DC. She holds a law degree from the University of Montreal and an MA from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). She speaks Italian, French, Spanish and is learning Arabic.

    Ife M. Osaga

    Ife M. Osaga joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2009 and worked on the Accessing Industrial Land indicators. Prior to joining the World Bank Group, Ife worked as a corporate lawyer in Nairobi, Kenya. She also worked on international law and development issues at various organizations including Oxfam America and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Ife holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Nairobi, a Master in Law and Diplomacy (MA) from the Fletcher School, Tufts University and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Columbia University Law School. She speaks Swahili and is conversant in French.

  • Swarnim Wagle

    Swarnim Waglé

    Swarnim Waglé joined the Investing Across Borders team in 2009 and developed the Investing Across Sectors indicators. He also worked on international trade-related issues in the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management department at the World Bank. Prior to joining the team, Swarnim worked at UNDP and the World Bank Group for nine years, mainly in the Asia-Pacific region. Swarnim holds a BSc in Economics from the London School of Economics and an MPA in International Development from Harvard.
